Every frame begins as a blank canvas of darkness. The decision of where to place the light is entirely secondary to the decision of where to preserve the shadow. Shadow is where the audience projects their own imagination.
Whether shooting on a modern large-format digital sensor or weaving 35mm film through a gate, the mechanics change but the intention remains rigid: to serve the narrative.
Analyzing the interplay between practical neons and deep, crushed shadows. The goal is to separate the subject from the background using complementary color contrast rather than mere luminance.
